The Martha Canfield Library is committed to providing an atmosphere where people of all ages may come to read, browse, do research or study. To make this possible, the following rules were adopted by the Board of Trustees.

  • Consideration of other patrons is expected. Interference with other patron's use of the library or with library employee’s performance of their duties is not allowed.
  • Conversations are to be quiet, or moved outside.
  • Running, pushing, shoving, throwing of objects, loud behavior, rudeness, profanity or other behavior generally considered unacceptable in a public place is not allowed.
  • Loitering, congregating or placing of personal objects so as to hinder another’s use of, convenient entry to and exit from the library, or seating inside the library is prohibited.
  • Animals shall not be allowed in the library except to assist a patron with a disability.
  • Intruding on another patron’s privacy is forbidden.
  • No campaigning, petitioning, or soliciting is allowed.
  • Food and drink is prohibited, except in the reserved Meeting Room.
  • Smoking is not allowed by Vermont Statute.
  • Library patrons are responsible for their own personal property.
  • Damaging library property or equipment is prohibited.

It is a patron’s responsibility to maintain necessary and proper behavior standards in order to protect his/her individual rights and the rights and privileges of other patrons. If a patron creates a public nuisance, he/she may be restricted from the library and from the use of library facilities. Those unwilling to leave within a reasonable amount of time after being instructed to do so by staff will be subject to removal by parents, if under 18 years, or by law enforcement if necessary.
